Where The Classics At?
Lately I’ve been tapped into some throwback hip-hop and neo-soul…
and it had me thinking—
damn… these are classics.
Songs like:
“Come Close” – Common
“A Long Walk” – Jill Scott
“Buddy” – Musiq Soulchild
Just real, feel-good jams. Soulful. Intentional. Timeless in a way that doesn’t feel forced.
And it made me pause for a second…
Do we even get that kind of vibe as much today?
Even thinking about something like “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus—
that emotional, uplifting, universal type of record.
It feels like those songs hit different.
And yeah, they’re considered classics… rightfully so.
But I started wondering—
are they classics only because they stood out in their time?
Or are they classics now because we don’t get that same energy as often anymore?
That thought kinda sat with me.
Because if it’s the second one… that’s a little sad.
Like… what happened to music that feels like that?
Music that’s warm, honest, and just sits with you without trying too hard?
Maybe it’s still out there and we just have to dig more.
Maybe it’s evolving into something new.
Or maybe it’s on us—as creators—to bring that feeling back in our own way.
I don’t know…
What do y’all think?
Am I tripping?
